MRU Cubs and Me

December 2, 2018

It started out as a request from my friend Heather.  Her daughter was performing with a dance team from Mount Royal University here in Calgary, Alberta.  Would I be willing to photograph the team at their performance during a basketball game?  I thought this would be a fun opportunity to try something different so I agreed quite readily.  Little did I know what was in store!

I have been photographing the MRU Cubs Dance Team now for over a year, and it has been a fantastic experience!!  These young ladies, all with varying dance training backgrounds, are a treat to watch perform, and even more fun to photograph.  I've been privileged to attend performances at the MRU Cougars' home basketball games (where the Cubs perform at half-time for both the Ladies and Mens teams), a few fund-raisers at local night clubs, and their 2018-2019 team auditions.  This week will be another fund-raiser, their first annual Winter Gala, and it's sure to be an exciting event!

As photographers, it's easy to get set into the genre of work we usually perform, and that can cause us to miss opportunities to enjoy a new challenge and broaden our skill-set.  This experience has been one I'll cherish for a long time.  So for those of you uncertain about working outside of your normal 'box', take a chance and do something new.  It will be worth the effort and time.
